What’s new in C# 6 ?

C# 6

Thew C# 6 features we will create a new Console application in Visual Studio. New -> New Console project. Right click on the project in Solution Explorer and then set the language options Properties -> Build -> Advanced -> Language version -> C#6
  •  using static keyword. Using this feature means that you can do away with fully qualified namespace resolution. Instead of Console.WriteLine() you can simply do this
using static System.Console;
...
WriteLine("welcome to blog");
  • Auto property initializer. The names says it all, but in case you’re unsure, you can initialize properties with default values, without the need for a constructor, like this
public class Customer
{
public int CusId { get; set; }
public string CusName { get; set; } = "Hillary Page";
public int CusAge { get; set; }
}
  • Dictionary Initializers. There’s a new way for initializing dictionaries:
static Dictionary GetTeachers()
{
// old way
var teacherDictionary = new Dictionary
{
{"Mr martin", "Height" },
{"Win Greek", "Job" },
{"Mrs Lela", "Life" }
};

// new way
var teacherDictionary2 = new Dictionary
{
["Mr martin"] = "Height",
["Jade Smith"] = "Job" ,
["Mrs Lela"] = "Life"
};
return teacherDictionary;
}
  • Exception Filters: No more unwinding of the stack!
public static void TestException()
{
try
{
throw new Exception("Error");
}
catch (Exception ex) when (ex.Message == "ReallyBadError")
{
// this one will not execute.
}
catch (Exception ex) when (ex.Message == "Error")
{
// this one will execute
WriteLine("This one will execute");
}
}
  • Async/Await in try/catch/finally
public static async void TestExceptionAsync()
{
try
{
throw new Exception("Error");
}
catch
{
await Task.Delay(2000);
WriteLine("Waiting 2 seconds");
}
finally
{
await Task.Delay(2000);
WriteLine("Waiting 2 seconds");
}
}
  • nameof. This function can be used instead of magic strings when needing to reference variable names in strings
public static void TestNameOf(string name)
{
WriteLine(name);
if(string.IsNullOrEmpty(name))
{
WriteLine($"Empty parameter provided: {nameof(name)}");
}
}
  • String Interpolation. This feature allows you to use any variable within a string composition without needing to use “concatenation” or string.Format(). You’ll notice that we also get full IntelliSense.
static void Main(string[] args)
{
var customer = new Customer { CustId = 1, CusAge = 30 };
WriteLine($"The customer name is: {customer .CusName}");
}
}
  • Null Conditional Operator. The operator checks to see if a referenced property is initialised (not-null) and then returns the value. If the property under evaluation is not initialised, it will return null.
var someValue = person?.Name;
Another cool feature with the Null Conditional Operator is that you can daisy chain calls like so:
string[] names = person?.Name?.Split(' ')
In this case, Split() will only be invoked if both person and person.Name are not null 🙂

What is the effective way of Communicating ?

 What is the effective way of Communicating?

How well know yourself?

Have you ever asked yourself this question. You must be fully comfortable within yourself before you can be effective in communicating with others.

True discussion requires the ability to be fully present and fully interested in the perspective of others. It is a discussion between equals, in which you are solid and aligned within yourself to the point that you are able to hear and desire to understand the opinion of another without interruption, without anger, and without “the need to be ‘right’.” There’s not necessarily a need to agree, but the ability to genuinely strive to understand another person’s perspective is a vital skill you should call upon often.

Take the time to increase your awareness. As we tend to “close ourselves off” to the world outside of our phones, the television, iPad, computer or our favorite book, what other information might await as we open ourselves up to confronting the world around us every day in 3 D? The outdoors, your own space, the objects around you—pick them up, feel them, hold them, genuinely discover them and you may be amazed by the things you will learn.

Inward Out

From the moment your feet hit the floor in the morning, become aware of the solidness of the floor, and take a moment to throw open the drapes and really take in the characteristics of the space that surrounds you. From this vantage point, you can spend the rest of your day with an attitude of looking “out” instead of contracting “inward.” It will make a great difference in the perspectives you see.

True integrity requires learning to be yourself – the same self – at all times and with all people. We’ve all seen the people who shift like a chameleon to be the person they consider fitting for every occasion. The suave and entertaining person who is life of the party and then goes home to yell at a spouse. The boss who shines like a star from the podium and after the program is over shouts abuse at his staff.

The person who feigns religious piety or political conservatism in front of the parent or boss and then becomes a different person entirely for the rest of the week. Great communication requires that you “lose the attitudes” you put on like a coat from your closet and learn to exist as the same authentic and integrated person in the presence of everyone else in your life. Who is that person? If you aren’t sure or the question is suddenly giving you pause, you have work to do.

How to get Help?

Help is only “help” in the eye of the receiver. People can become upset if the “help” you provide isn’t helpful for them. As you provide something others didn’t really want or weren’t expecting, they become annoyed and you consider them ungrateful. As a boss, the help you are needing should take the form of a job description (the clearer the better).

As a manager or team member, learn to ask the deeper questions such as, “Of everything on your plate, if you were to receive help, what would be most beneficial?” or “What kinds of feedback or additional information would be most useful to you?” These small steps can save untold anxiety while also respecting and empowering the people you serve. It is also interesting to note that research shows millennial employees are especially poised to thrive on help—not on getting help, but on giving it.

The opportunity to serve others in a way they consider meaningful can be extremely motivational and rewarding for them. (Pamela notes that this principle is highly true when working with children as well.)

Emotional Balanced

Get to know the Top most leaders always find the best way to communicate How Leaders communicate?

Be aware of your emotional level before you respond. Beyond words, we live in a continuum of attitudes and emotions. At any instant our emotional state can range from zero (complete apathy) to ten (flaming rage). We are at our cognitive best when we are operating at or near the center of the emotional spectrum. Before making a major choice, and especially before responding in a difficult situation, it is vital to step back and take your emotional pulse.

Especially when you are angry, ask yourself “What is it I want to happen? Is what I’m about to say or do the best way to achieve that result?” As Pamela will say, “Words have power. You can’t take them back. Use them with care.” Of all the “Pam Lessons” that have stayed with me, this single principle has changed outcomes within my business again and again.

Always sleep on a hard decision or discussion before acting. Avoid the temptation to react to a volatile situation with ill chosen words. This advice applies to “bragging” as well—when a former business competitor bragged about a contract before the deal was actually won, it reminded me to reach back out to the former account. The result: it was my team who won the sizable deal.

Reaching High Status

In another company a highly accomplished sales VP, after drinking too much on the eve of a major company conference, bragged that his company and CEO were inferior but were leading the market anyway due entirely to his brilliant performance in sales. The next morning, he was relieved of his job. It is also interesting in business (and personal) situations to observe that the greatest power in the room is often held by the individuals who aren’t speaking–the strongest people are often the ones who have sufficient confidence and emotional restraint to keep their mouths closed.

Trust, loyalty, faithfulness and honesty are the cornerstones to resolving misunderstandings and lies. Unless people are deliberately vicious and evil, they don’t purposely tell lies, they simply interpret what they see or are told. If there’s a “drama”  in the person’s nature, they’ll also embellish it a bit for a better story.

How to kill Assumptions?

But at all times, as a communicator, be careful and aware of the assumptions you make. Allow other parties to explain themselves, or take the time to investigate the facts sufficiently before you jump to accuse. You should put critical communications in writing. However, when misunderstandings occur, if the four key elements are present—trust, loyalty, faithfulness and honesty–the majority of misunderstandings are quickly resolved.

No matter how dire a misunderstanding, great communicators will seek out the information they need before reacting and will maintain an atmosphere of respect in the conversation that ensues. If it turns out that the worst has actually happened, you will at least be armed with correct information (and the advantage of forethought) before acting.

Remember that with an attitude of respect you can be successful within most any conversation, no matter how tough. However, if respect and honesty aren’t possible on either side of the table, there is little basis for the partnership to exist and very little hope the relationship can be saved.

No choice than Killing FEAR

Fear is the enemy of communication. Anxiety, nervousness, panic, loss of control (or the need to take full control) are the signposts of fear. At a primal level, fear is your brain’s way of warning you to react quickly (even instantly) to present dangers or to triggers that appear similar to bad experiences you’ve had in the past.

Healthy fear reacts to real and present dangers. Unhealthy fear makes people feel insecure. They don’t trust others, nor do they trust themselves to be strong enough to handle the negative situations they may face. What are your own fears? Name them – remember them – and determine once and for all (if needed, with a counselor’s help) if these are real dangers or simply the unhealthy act of giving away strength to the irrelevant thing that you fear.

As you determine what you’re afraid of (and why) it may help to ask yourself just how big the danger is. Bigger than an avalanche? And now describe a fear you don’t have that’s even bigger than that. A train wreck? Or a bomb explosion? From that perspective, perhaps your fear of giving a speech is not such a big deal after all, and you can free yourself to proceed.

Build your Positive Attitude

The article shows the trick and tips to build positive attitude easily Build Positive Attitude in simple ways

Blame is an irresponsible attitude. When you assign blame, you demonstrate to the world that you are too weak to own the responsibility of your actions. When a person jumps to blame others, they lose the ability to make a truthful assessment of the relevant facts. Blame becomes wrapped up with its companions of Shame and Regret.

The opposite of blame is responsibility (response+ability), the power to respond to a situation and the ability to make it right, if possible. Sincere apologies are the result of responsibility. But a person who is shamed into apologizing is not genuinely apologizing at all. And regret is a useless emotion that leaves a person mired and “stuck” in the past.

Summary

So the next time you are tempted to blame the tool you’ve used, or the manufacturer, or another person, take the time to investigate all of the facts and enact a responsible solution instead.

Visual Studio 2017 Step-back while debugging with IntelliTrace

Have you ever stepped while debugging, realized that you’ve taken one step too far, and wished you could step back? Or, while stepping, saw a variable change in an unexpected way, and wish you could go back a step and see what its value was before? Now you can, all without having to restart debugging to recreate the state again!
In Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 version 15.5 Preview, we are introducing IntelliTrace’s new “step-back” feature. IntelliTrace now automatically takes a snapshot of your application on each breakpoint and debugger step you take. This enables you to go back to previous breakpoints or steps and view the state of the application as it was in the past.
Let’s see it in action.

Debugging with step-back

First, to enable the feature, go to ToolsOptionsIntelliTrace settings, and select the option “IntelliTrace events and snapshots.”
Turn it on in Tools Options IntelliTrace General
IntelliTrace step-back is designed to integrate into your everyday debugging experience.
As you’re debugging, IntelliTrace records your steps and breakpoint events in the Events tab in the Diagnostic Tools window. When the step-back feature is enabled, it will also take a snapshot of your application on each debugger step and breakpoint that is hit. A camera icon will appear next to the events for which a snapshot is available.
Turn it on in Tools Options IntelliTrace General
Note: For performance reasons, snapshots are not taken when you step very quickly. If no camera icon appears next to the step, try varying your stepping speed.

Using the new Step Backward and Forward buttons

You can use step-back via the new Step Backward and Step Forward icons in the Debug toolbar. These icons navigate the events in the Events Tab. So, if you’ve just taken a step in live debugging (F10 or F11), you can use the Step Backward button to quickly navigate to the previous step. This will automatically put Visual Studio in Historical debugging mode, at the line of code you’ve stepped back to. Historical debugging is what we call the view of the application in the past.
Step Back Forward Buttons
In this mode, you’ll be able to see the values of your Call Stack, Locals, and Watches, just as you would in regular, live debugging. You can also evaluate expressions in the Watch Window and hover over variables to see data tips. All these values are populated using the data from the snapshot.
The data IntelliTrace previously recorded for debugger events only captured the variables you’d already expanded in the Locals window at that point in time. However, the data associated with a snapshot contains a view of the entire heap, including any complex objects.
Note: Unlike using Set Next Statement and re-running your code, viewing a snapshot doesn’t re-run your code; it gives you a static view of the state of the application at a point in time that has occurred in the past.
You can then use the Step Forward and Step Backward buttons to navigate between these events in the past. To return to live debugging, you can hit Continue (F5) or the Return to Live Debugging link in the gold bar.
Return to Live Debugging

Viewing snapshots via the Diagnostic Tools window

Snapshots can also be viewed from the Events tab in the Diagnostic Tools window. To view a snapshot, first select the event you’re interested in. Then, either click directly on the camera icon, or click the “Activating historical debugging” link on the event. Once you’ve done either of these actions, Visual Studio will be put in Historical Debugging mode at the line of code related to the event you’ve selected.
From here, you’ll be able to see the values of your Call Stack, Locals, and Watches, just as you would in regular, live debugging. You can also evaluate expressions in the Watch Window and hover over variables to see data tips.
With the new IntelliTrace step-back feature, you’ll be able to quickly step-back to previous debugger steps and breakpoints and view the state of your application in the past – all without having to restart debugging to reproduce the application state.

Try it out

The IntelliTrace step-back feature is available in Visual Studio Enterprise 2017 version 15.5 Preview, and requires Windows 10 Anniversary Update or above. The feature is currently supported for WinForms, WPF, Managed Console apps, and Managed Class Libraries. Support for debugging ASP.NET applications with IIS Express will be available in an upcoming release of Visual Studio.

Google’s old AI boss is now at Apple in charge of Siri and ML efforts

Google’s poached head of search and artificial intelligence is now leading Siri and machine learning efforts at rival Apple.
John Giannandrea joined Google back in 2010 before stepping down in April this year. He announced he’d been hired by Apple the following day, but in what position had been a mystery until now.
It was obvious Giannandrea would be stepping into a big role at Apple, and that’s exactly what’s happened.
AI is becoming increasingly important and an area where Google is seen as a leader due to its vast experience in search and cloud technologies.
Apple, which continues to focus on on-device AI citing improved privacy, has struggled to keep up with Google’s AI advancements.
The hire of Giannandrea is undoubtedly a big win for Apple.
Giannandrea will be heading Apple’s machine learning division and will therefore be responsible for efforts including Siri and CoreML.
His official title is ‘chief of machine learning and AI strategy’ and is sure to have a hefty-but-undisclosed salary.
Apple’s continued desire to put privacy first is respectable but may continue to put the company at somewhat of a disadvantage to companies such as Google and Facebook which collect masses of data.
We look forward to seeing where Giannandrea takes Apple’s machine learning and AI efforts in the years to come.

Consumers want businesses to have more human-like AI

Research has found most consumers have interacted with AI and would priorities businesses with human-like implementations.
The research, from Capgemini’s Digital Transformation Institute, found close to three-quarters (73 percent) of consumers have interacted via AI.
Satisfaction with those who have experienced AI interactions is slightly lower, at 69 percent. Over two-thirds satisfaction is quite surprisingly high, especially when you consider how dissatisfied people typically are with traditional automated systems.
Just over half (55%) of consumers across all age groups want interactions to be a mix of AI and humans, while 64 percent want AIs to be more ‘human-like’ rather than ‘human-looking’.
Interestingly, the fear surrounding AI intellect – likely instilled through sci-fi movies such as Terminator – appears to be decreasing. More than three in five consumers (62%) are now comfortable with an AI featuring human-like intellect.
Where an AI has the desired human-like qualities, almost half (48%) say they feel more goodwill towards a company and would have a greater propensity to spend.
One major benefit the majority (63%) of people felt AI had over humans was its 24/7 availability and how it provides greater control over their interactions.
Back in May, Google showed a demo of its impressive-yet-controversial ‘Duplex’ (now renamed to ‘Duet’) AI system which could make calls on a person’s behalf while sounding like a human. It was shown booking a hair salon appointment with the other person completely unaware they were speaking to an AI.
48 percent of respondents say the opportunity to be able to delegate tasks to an electronic personal assistant is exciting, with another 46 percent believing it will enhance their quality of life.
Despite consumers wanting AI to have human attributes like similar voice (62%) and the ability to understand emotions (57%), they also find them “creepy” and do not want them to appear human.
More than half (52%) of customers are not comfortable when AI is set up to look like a person. The report also finds that two-thirds of consumers (66%) would like to be made aware when companies are enabling interactions via AI.
Some companies, such as Google and Microsoft, have committed themselves to ensuring their AIs identify themselves as such to a human at the beginning of an interaction. Lawmakers are considering legislation to make this a legal obligation.
The research surveyed 10,000 consumers and more than 500 executives at leading organisations across 10 global markets.

AI can determine your personality through eye movements

Artificial Intelligence

A global team of scientists have discovered AI can tell an individual’s personality traits by analysing their eye movements.
The scientists used machine learning to discover a link between eye movements and the personality of a person earlier this year.
Armed with this information, the researchers deployed AI to analyse the eye movements of 42 students. The results were announced last week.
In psychology, there are five basic personality traits: Extraversion, Agreeableness, Openness, Conscientiousness, and Neuroticism.
The scientists discovered their AI was able to find a correlation between the eyes of the students and four of the five personality traits. Openness was the only trait it struggled to link with eye movements.
By enabling a greater understanding of the individual, the researchers hope their AI could be used to improve the personalisation of services.
Tobias Loetscher, lead researcher of the project, explains:
“Today’s robots and computers are not socially-aware, so they cannot adapt to non-verbal cues.
This research provides opportunities to develop robots and computers so that they can become more natural and better at interpreting human social signals.”
Naturally, there will also be some concerns about the use of such technology. For example, it could be abused to determine whether a person is susceptible to manipulation.
Advertisers are another sector of society that would love to get their hands on such technology in order to further target campaigns.
The global team of scientists included researchers from the University of Stuttgart, University of South Australia, Flinders University, and the Max Planck Institute for Informatics.
Their work once again highlights the possibilities of AI technology in society, but also the potential for abuse.
A full copy of the research can be found here.

Want to become a LEADER ?

Having a great idea, and assembling a team to bring that concept to life is the first step in creating a successful business venture. While finding a new and unique idea is rare enough; the ability to successfully execute this idea is what separates the dreamers from the entrepreneurs. However you see yourself, whatever your age may be, as soon as you make that exciting first hire, you have taken the first steps in becoming a powerful leader. When money is tight and startup fundraising is required, stress levels are high, and the visions of instant success don’t happen like you thought, it’s easy to let those emotions get to you, and thereby your team. Take a breath, calm yourself down, and remind yourself of the leader you are and would like to become. Here are some key qualities that every good leader should possess, and learn to emphasize.

Honesty

Whatever ethical plane you hold yourself to, when you are responsible for a team of people, its important to raise the bar even higher. Your business and its employees are a reflection of yourself, and if you make honest and ethical behavior a key value, your team will follow suit.

As we do at CoFoundersLab, one of the largest networks for entrepreneurs online, we try to make a list of values and core beliefs that both you and your brand represent, and post this in your office. Promote a healthy interoffice lifestyle, and encourage your team to live up to these standards. By emphasizing these standards, and displaying them yourself, you will hopefully influence the office environment into a friendly and helpful workspace.

Delegate

Finessing your brand vision is essential to creating an organized and efficient business, but if you don’t learn to trust your team with that vision, you might never progress to the next stage. Its important to remember that trusting your team with your idea is a sign of strength, not weakness. Delegating tasks to the appropriate departments is one of the most important skills you can develop as your business grows. The emails and tasks will begin to pile up, and the more you stretch yourself thin, the lower the quality of your work will become, and the less you will produce.

The key to delegation is identifying the strengths of your team, and capitalizing on them. Find out what each team member enjoys doing most. Chances are if they find that task more enjoyable, they will likely put more thought and effort behind it. This will not only prove to your team that you trust and believe in them, but will also free up your time to focus on the higher level tasks, that should not be delegated. It’s a fine balance, but one that will have a huge impact on the productivity of your business.

Communication

Knowing what you want accomplished may seem clear in your head, but if you try to explain it to someone else and are met with a blank expression, you know there is a problem. If this has been your experience, then you may want to focus on honing your communication skills. Being able to clearly and succinctly describe what you want done is extremely important. If you can’t relate your vision to your team, you won’t all be working towards the same goal.

Training new members and creating a productive work environment all depend on healthy lines of communication. Whether that stems from an open door policy to your office, or making it a point to talk to your staff on a daily basis, making yourself available to discuss interoffice issues is vital. Your team will learn to trust and depend on you, and will be less hesitant to work harder.

If your website crashes, you lose that major client, or your funding dries up, guiding your team through the process without panicking is as challenging as it is important. Morale is linked to productivity, and it’s your job as the team leader to instill a positive energy. That’s where your sense of humor will finally pay off. Encourage your team to laugh at the mistakes instead of crying. If you are constantly learning to find the humor in the struggles, your work environment will become a happy and healthy space, where your employees look forward to working in, rather than dreading it. Make it a point to crack jokes with your team and encourage personal discussions of weekend plans and trips. It’s these short breaks from the task at hand that help keep productivity levels high and morale even higher.

At Onevest, we place a huge emphasis on humor and a light atmosphere. Our office is dog friendly, and we really believe it is the small, light hearted moments in the day that help keep our work creative and fresh. One tradition that we like to do and brings the team closer is we plan a fun prank on all new employees, on their first day. It breaks the ice and immediately creates that sense of familiarity.

Confidence

There may be days where the future of your brand is worrisome and things aren’t going according to plan. This is true with any business, large or small, and the most important thing is not to panic. Part of your job as a leader is to put out fires and maintain the team morale. Keep up your confidence level, and assure everyone that setbacks are natural and the important thing is to focus on the larger goal. As the leader, by staying calm and confident, you will help keep the team feeling the same. Remember, your team will take cues from you, so if you exude a level of calm damage control, your team will pick up on that feeling. The key objective is to keep everyone working and moving ahead.

Commitment

If you expect your team to work hard and produce quality content, you’re going to need to lead by example. There is no greater motivation than seeing the boss down in the trenches working alongside everyone else, showing that hard work is being done on every level. By proving your commitment to the brand and your role, you will not only earn the respect of your team, but will also instill that same hardworking energy among your staff. It’s important to show your commitment not only to the work at hand, but also to your promises. If you pledged to host a holiday party, or uphold summer Fridays, keep your word. You want to create a reputation for not just working hard, but also be known as a fair leader. Once you have gained the respect of your team, they are more likely to deliver the peak amount of quality work possible.

Positive Attitude

You want to keep your team motivated towards the continued success of the company, and keep the energy levels up. Whether that means providing snacks, coffee, relationship advice, or even just an occasional beer in the office, remember that everyone on your team is a person. Keep the office mood a fine balance between productivity and playfulness.
If your team is feeling happy and upbeat, chances are they won’t mind staying that extra hour to finish a report, or devoting their best work to the brand.

Creativity

Some decisions will not always be so clear-cut. You may be forced at times to deviate from your set course and make an on the fly decision. This is where your creativity will prove to be vital. It is during these critical situations that your team will look to you for guidance and you may be forced to make a quick decision. As a leader, its important to learn to think outside the box and to choose which of two bad choices is the best option. Don’t immediately choose the first or easiest possibility; sometimes its best to give these issues some thought, and even turn to your team for guidance. By utilizing all possible options before making a rash decision, you can typically reach the end conclusion you were aiming for.

Intuition

When leading a team through uncharted waters, there is no roadmap on what to do. Everything is uncertain, and the higher the risk, the higher the pressure. That is where your natural intuition has to kick in. Guiding your team through the process of your day-to-day tasks can be honed down to a science. But when something unexpected occurs, or you are thrown into a new scenario, your team will look to you for guidance. Drawing on past experience is a good reflex, as is reaching out to your mentors for support. Eventually though, the tough decisions will be up to you to decide and you will need to depend on your gut instinct for answers. Learning to trust yourself is as important as your team learning to trust you.

Inspire

Creating a business often involves a bit of forecasting. Especially in the beginning stages of a startup, inspiring your team to see the vision of the successes to come is vital. Make your team feel invested in the accomplishments of the company. Whether everyone owns a piece of equity, or you operate on a bonus system, generating enthusiasm for the hard work you are all putting in is so important. Being able to inspire your team is great for focusing on the future goals, but it is also important for the current issues. When you are all mired deep in work, morale is low, and energy levels are fading, recognize that everyone needs a break now and then. Acknowledge the work that everyone has dedicated and commend the team on each of their efforts. It is your job to keep spirits up, and that begins with an appreciation for the hard work.

Approach

Not all human beings are the same. A basic concept, but something that is often overlooked. You have cultural perspectives, language barriers, different educational backgrounds, personality traits and varying value systems with which individuals come pre-conditioned that greatly affects how information is processed and interpreted. Some people work well under pressure, others don’t. Some respond best to tough love, others take it personally and shut down. In order to optimize your effectiveness as a leader, you must have the ability to customize your approach on a person by person basis, based on the situation at hand. Your capacity to execute this concept will play a huge role in your ability to get the best work out of your team and other partners along the journey.
